Cider & Crabapple Varieties

    • Requires cross-pollination from other mid-to-late blooming apple varieties.

    • Harvest in late-October into early-November

    • Bittersharp flavor: The apple provides an ideal balance of sugar, acidity, and tannins, essential for complex ciders.

    • Juice qualities: The juice is a deep, tawny red with notes of citrus, butterscotch, and earthiness.

    • Produces small-medium fruit.

    • One of the earliest crabapples to leaf out and bloom in the spring. The blossoms are snowy white, fragrant, and prolific.

    • The fruit is very tart but edible and is often used for cider.

    • The tiny crabapples are red to yellow and about 1/4 to 1/2 inch in diameter.

    • Mature height typically reaches 15-20ft

    • Not self-fertile and requires a compatible pollinator. Other mid-blooming varieties of apple or crabapple within a quarter-mile will work.

    • Harvest: they ripen in October and drop from the tree when ready. They only store for a couple of weeks after harvest.

    • Juice quality: A "vintage quality" medium bittersweet apple with good sugar levels, low acidity, and soft tannins.

    • Flavor and aroma: Complex flavor with notes of oak, spice, leather, and rich caramel. When fermented, it can create a full-bodied, flavorful cider with a rich brown color.
