Miscanthus Giganteus Rhizomes

  • Recommended planting for screens is at least 2 rows. Spacing at least 18-36 inches apart. Plant every other row staggered with the same spacing. The individual rhizomes should be planted 3-4 inches deep.

  • 1-3 Stalks about 1-3 ft tall can be expected in the first year of growth. By the 2nd year, you get an average of 7stalks, about 6-7 ft. In the 3rd year, the clusters will be around 14” in diameter, with about 25 stalks at full height (11’+). In the 4th year, 2 rhizomes planted 18” apart will grow into each other. Slower spread with heavy soil or clay and a faster spread with sandy loam.

  • Fertilize at planting with a rootdip (Plot Dr. Dry), and then about 3 weeks after planting with Plot Dr. Foliar fertilizer. When fertilizing fall food plots, do another application of Plot Dr. products. At the same time we spray 2-4D based herbicide to knock back the new weed seed germination that has taken place. Miscanthus is in the grass family like corn. Common corn herbicides that have been used successfully are; Dual, Atrazine, and 2,4-D.
